The color green has traditionally signified nature, animism, naivety and envy in the Anglophone community, long before it became synonymous with eco-friendly or being environmentally conscious with the onset of climate change in the late 20th century.

In the 2nd Jeju International Green MICE Week scheduled for Nov. 7 through Nov. 14, forum participants will try to tackle two metaphorical aspects embedded in the word green—mother nature and preservation.

The problem the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) industry has traditionally faced among environmentally conscious event planners has been its disproportionate carbon footprint. Large scale international conferences and corporate incentive tours inevitably incur millions of combined air miles by thousands of invitees and participants. Those jet-setters have been commonly mocked in environmentally conscious circles as “limousine liberals” or “Gulf Stream environmentalists.”

Though the human race will not solve the issue of mile high jet pollution anytime soon, Jeju has an answer to reduce the size of the footprint left by carbon bipeds, at least for ground activities—Olle trekking, an eco-friendly and near zero emission way to enjoy mother nature.

Suh Myung Sook, the founder of Jeju Olle, will invite over 10,000 trekkers worldwide to Jeju for an event titled World Trail Conference 2010. Originally popular among free individual travelers, Jeju Olle has recently been adopted by many Korean companies as one of the most effective and carbon free corporate team building and incentive tour programs. The forum participants will discuss ways to further globalize the islands’ unique trails this November by networking with similar trekking programs worldwide as well as walking the Jeju trails.

Separately, the Jeju Tourism Organization is planning to hold the Jeju Incentive Tour & Meeting Forum at the Jeju Haevichi Hotel & Resort, where scores of corporate team building and theme party programs, developed by the Jeju Tourism Association, will be showcased for evaluation. Set against the pastoral background of the island, the team building events will testify to the validity of the green theme of the conference this year.

The island’s status as a test site for the nation’s carbon free economy has offered MICE industry an unusual opportunity—a special themed tour around the island’s various green energy infrastructures, including a smart grid energy network. Six sites on the island have been identified and included in the tour titled Korea’s Smart Grid Test Bed. Participants will be able to peek inside the future of green energy networks by visiting renewable energy and smart grid showrooms or smart homes. Or they can stop by some battery charging stations for electric vehicles.

Though the initial Green MICE Week was criticized for not having enough content about the subject, other than the ubiquitous color green, the 2nd Jeju International Green MICE Week will hopefully prove itself that the conference can live up to its lofty green bill with some compelling propositions.
