CIFAL (Centre International de Formation des Autorités/Acteurs Locaux) Jeju’s inauguration ceremony was held on Oct. 13, 2010 at the International Peace Center in Jeju. Among the 60 distinguished guests who congratulated the inauguration of CIFAL Jeju were Jeju Governor Woo Keun Min, Jeju National University President Hur Hyang Jin, Ambassador Chung Dalho, CIFAL Jeju’s Director Sun Jun Young, the CEO of the UN Association of Korea, as well as local dignitaries.

Governor Woo highlighted in his congratulatory remarks the significance of CIFAL Jeju. He stated that CIFAL Jeju will serve as “an opportunity for high level authorities (such as NGO leaders, administrators, and members of parliament) to strengthen capacity building and knowledge sharing in the areas of the environment, and human security of the Asia-Pacific region.” Jun, CEO of the UN Association of Korea, noted CIFAL Jeju’s role in responding to growing needs for international cooperation, saying that the inauguration of the CIFAL Jeju reflects the improved status of Korea in the international community.

CIFAL Jeju is the newest local development training centre under UNITAR and is the ninth centre in the world of its kind, and third in Asia. The new member of the worldwide CIFAL Network will provide training programmes to local governments of the Asia Pacific region to develop their capacities in policy implementation, especially in the area of environment and human security at local, national, and regional levels.

The first training program “The Low-Carbon City: Green Growth for Local Governments in the Asia-Pacific Region” will be held from Nov. 11 to 13, 2010 in Jeju. (By Song Jung Hee)
