New7Wonders organization, a Swiss-based nonprofit foundation, has highlighted Jeju Island as one of the most symbolically powerful nominees among the total of 261 qualified multinational nominees.
The magnificent natural beauty Jeju Island provides is now ready to represent not just the Republic of Korea, but the world. Jeju Island was proudly selected as one of the 441 “natural wonder” locations in the world, with first voting done Dec. 31, 2008.
The second round of voting for the whole pool of nominees is being continued through July 7, 2009. Currently, Jeju Island is ranked as the seventh place in the “island” category. Only the Top 77, based on the voting results, will be eligible for review done by the New7Wonders of Nature panel of experts, under the leadership of Prof. Federico Mayor, former Director-General of UNESCO, as they choose the 21 finalists.
The finalists will be announced on July 21, 2009. The final declaration of the New7Wonders of Nature will be in 2011. Voting for the Official New7Wonders of Nature is done from everywhere on the planet, via the internet and telephone on the N7W Global Voting Platform. The seven selected wonders will become a global memory, seven things that everyone worldwide can remember.
