Sitting at my desk on the third floor of our Venture Maru office, I get a panoramic view of one of the most vibrant areas of Jeju City: City Hall.

From my vantage point, I can see plenty of Korean and foreign tourists as well as English teacher expats walking to and fro. Witnessing this often leads me to ask: how can we better serve this community? People living both here and abroad read us for insights into Jeju life. Korean readers open our pages to find news, views and perspectives written by non-Koreans about life in Jeju, and life in Korea more generally.

So this week I’m very happy to introduce a number of new features which I believe will help to get your voice heard.

The Jeju Weekly will launch a dedicated Opinions, Topics and Letters section, which is essentially your place to pose questions to others and comment on issues that affect you. If you have some problem or inquiry on subjects like immigration, law, culture, etc., email us at editor@jeju weekly.com and we will do our best to find an expert to give you an answer.

We’re also happy to welcome John Keith, a new contributor to The Weekly with degrees in Film Studies and English, who will be writing film reviews of English-language movies that are playing on the island. We’re still looking for someone to do the Korean movie reviews in English, so if you know someone who’s a big fan of Korean films, let them know we’d like to hear from them.

In fostering these sections, I hope that anyone who reads a future issue of The Weekly, either in print or online, will be well served by the opinions and information we have on offer.

December will be a tough month for our staff; we’ll be short handed because some of our writers are heading home on vacation. So if you have an interest in writing for a local newspaper, this is your chance. In addition to our non-Korean writers, I hope to encourage more locals to contribute to The Jeju Weekly either with the occasional one-off story, or by becoming regular contributors.

Our office door (and email box) is always open.
