With the recent continuous spread of foot-and-mouth disease, the 18th Seongsan Sunrise Festival, which was planned to be held on Dec. 31, has been canceled.
Seongsan-eup President Ko Joo Young and Seongsan Sunrise Festival Committee Chair Jung Kwan Kyu convened 30 committee members on Dec. 25 for an emergency meeting and made the decision to cancel the festival due to concerns of the spread of the disease on the island.
The committee announced that they came to this decision in light of many other such events being cancelled around the nation because of the FMD emergency.
Chairman Jung said, “Even though as the representative sunrise festival of Korea we worked hard preparing various festival programs ... we decided to cancel the festival to help Jeju livestock farmers overcome their difficulties.”
In related news, the Udo Sunrise Festival and 12th Seogwipo Winter Sea Penguin Swimming Festival (Jan. 5 to Jan. 9) are also canceled. As of this writing, seven Olle trails which border farms around the island have been closed until further notice.
