“I am living the dream,” said Donna Dougal, and anyone who knows Donna will agree that she loves her life on Jeju, especially her job as a teacher.

Donna came to Jeju several months ago after a friend from home, Kirsty Angove, asked if she would join her hagwon (a private learning academy) in Jeju City. The decision to go through with all the paperwork and get on the plane was a difficult one, but, as Donna remarked after recounting the process of coming to the island, “I’ve never looked back.”

Kirsty and Donna were childhood friends, both originally from Eyemouth, Scotland, a small, coastal town in the Southeast of the country. Before Kirsty signed her yearlong contract on Jeju, she had completed a temporary teaching commission on the mainland. She always knew she wanted to come back to Korea. “... I really missed living by the sea, so for my second contract I looked for a beach location. Jeju just seemed the logical choice,” Kirsty explained.

“Beautiful” was an adjective the women shared when praising Jeju, but Eyemouth, as well as much of Scotland, is also very picturesque. “[I miss] my friends, the mountains, Christmas time, and Ceilidh [Scottish folk] dancing,” Kirsty exclaimed.

Seeing pictures of Jeju helped Kirsty choose it as a work destination: “I liked the idea of an island paradise.” However, it seems that the advertisements for Jeju could be a little misleading.

“[I] wish there were more beach days in the year ... meaning a longer summer and no winter. I expected a warmer climate. I didn’t expect snow!” she said.

Nevertheless, the two friends have been enjoying themselves through all seasons despite recent treacherous weather. They love going to cafés to sip on green tea lattes, to noraebang (Korea’s version of karaoke) to sing, and on grand adventures like off-road driving and hiking Mt. Halla.

“It would definitely be easy to settle here one day,” said Kirsty after noting the aspects of Jeju and Korean life she appreciates the most. But both Kirsty and Donna have bigger plans that don’t involve renewing contracts at their hagwon.

Donna wants to go back to Scotland to pursue a degree in education. “I never really considered teaching as a career until a few months after being in Jeju,” she said. “I took to it like a duck to water.”

Kirsty heard a calling of a different kind, one that had little to do with Jeju and everything to do with her faith: “I feel like God brought me here to meet the people I have met, and at just the right time.” She has applied to the Word of Life Bible Institute, which opened on Jeju in late September 2010, to study the Bible in depth for a full year.

Kirsty has felt a stir to attend a Bible college for a while, but it wasn’t until this January that she finalized her decision. “As soon as I put aside the things I had been planning and said ‘yes’ to Bible school, I felt such a tremendous peace about this year. It was amazing,” she said. “I like that God led me to a beautiful island to study His word, as I am always amazed by the beauty of His creation.”

Until they move on to their next steps, the two will continue to learn fun Korean words and absorb Korean culture, which they will take home. “Korea in general will forever be a part of me,” said Kirsty.
