Staffing is always an issue for any high-stress job with relatively low pay. I think that more or less defines journalism. In our case, The Jeju Weekly relies on contributors for the bulk of our writing. Some have English degrees from their native lands, and some even have journalism training and experience. All are English teachers.

A new semester will soon be upon us. That means we’ll be losing a number of our regular writers. Many more have new schedules which may affect their availability.

I would like to mention the contributions made by four such contributors whose bylines I’m sure you’ll recognize. Chris Moule was writing for The Weekly before I became editor, and he has earned a reputation as a dependable and solid writer who took on some very important assignments (like his report on Islam in Jeju) and impressed us all.

Erin Ford came to The Weekly with great enthusiasm and accepted stories on subjects like Olle trails and laser eye surgery, reviewed a couple of tourism sites, and gave us an opinion piece on vegetarianism. She was always ready to say “yes” to a piece, even at the last moment.

Daniel McNamee was new to journalism when we sent him to cover a golf tournament — and he really wowed us with his knowledge of the game and the readability of his work. He covered a number of golf-related stories and even found time to train, run and then write about his first-ever marathon. His energy and drive impressed us.

Danielle Ching only recently began to write for us but she took readers on a couple of restaurant reviews that were descriptive and fair.

To these four I wish a safe journey, good luck in the future and hearty thanks for your work here with The Jeju Weekly.

I have a simple message, dear readers: please consider writing for The Jeju Weekly. I’ve said it before. We’re your community newspaper. I see a lot of potential contributors walking around our office near Jeju City Hall. I invite any of you to drop by the Venture Maru building — the 10-story building next to City Hall — Room 306.
