Following the strong earthquake of 8.9 magnitude which occurred in Tohoku, Japan on March 11, at 2:46 p.m., Jeju Governor Woo Keun Min has directed officials to check the casualties suffered by overseas Koreans living in Sendai and other destroyed districts and to prepare supporting measures.

It was also revealed that Governor Woo tried to contact the Korean (Jeju) Japanese Tokyo Office and Jeju representatives in Sendai but failed.

Meanwhile, Jeju continues to keep in contact with the Japanese Embassy and Sendai Consulate General as it works to estimate the damage in Japan. According to the Japanese Embassy, the number of Jeju casualties of the quake is unknown.

250 Jeju residents abroad are known to reside in Sendai.
