The atmosphere at Ora baseball stadium was heated as a professional baseball exhibition game was held in Jeju after a 3-year hiatus. The Korean Baseball Organization held two 2011 exhibition opening games between Nexen and KIA on March 12 and March 13 on Jeju Island.

KIA had their first professional baseball game in Jeju for the first time some 27 years after the team was first established. Jeju’s baseball fans did not have a chance to watch the professional baseball exhibition game after 2008.

KBO first planned to held game in Mokdong, but in order to expand the base and to provide the service to Jeju’s baseball fans, it changed the stadium to Ora.

In the opening game on March 12, Governor Woo started the game by throwing the first ball. Baseball players from Jeju’s middle school undertook the role as game assistants.

In this game, about 7,000 spectators attended. A number of people came one hour before the game and filled up most of the stadium’s 8,000 seats.

In the tie-breaker [Note: in an exhibition game, because of time limits an extra inning is played with different rules], KIA Tigers beat Nexen Heroes by 4-3. KIA had tasted its first ever victory in Jeju.

In the second game on March 13, Ora baseball stadium was again filled with 7,000 spectators. Police were on duty to maintain order and control traffic.

“It is exciting to watch the baseball game, which I [had previously] only seen through the television, right in front of my eyes,” said spectator Lee Jung Ae (31, from Ido-2 dong). “I hope Jeju would frequently have this kind of opportunity for expanding the base of professional baseball and providing service to Jeju fans.”

For this day’s game, Nexen, encouraged by Yoo Han Jun’s outstanding performance, beat KIA by 4-3. This reverse result of the first game gave KIA and Nexon a victory each in the Jeju exhibition games.
