As we celebrate our second anniversary, I would like to take a moment to express our sincere appreciation to our readers and clients for their support over the past two years.

Like most new businesses, this newspaper was a small, two-person operation at the beginning, and success — even survival — was far from guaranteed. Looking back, “knowing nothing about the newspaper business” was ironically the biggest motivation behind jumping right into it. In fact, nothing prepared me for the business and management. The paper was started simply because I knew we needed it.

Now, I am proud to call The Jeju Weekly “our” newspaper, not “my” newspaper, and while serving as the publisher of The Jeju Weekly, it gives me great satisfaction to expand the horizons of the paper beyond Jeju Island and to see the dedication that our staff brings to work each day — planning, writing, editing, designing, printing, and distributing. In our two-year history, we have made many attempts to become part of the foreign community. Many have worked, while some have not.

Our Web site’s (www.jejuweekly.com) statistics demonstrate that the paper has become increasingly important to foreign residents and English speakers. We average around 25,000 page views daily and many more at our Facebook group (www.facebook.com/JejuWeekly). Over the next few years we plan to build a stronger online presence to bring our community even closer together and harness the power of instant communication.

The Weekly’s average circulation numbers have continued to increase. We’ve expanded and streamlined our production, and this year we launched a Chinese edition of the paper to better serve the increasing number of Chinese residents and tourists.

Yet, there are still old and new challenges ahead. We are subject to financial vulnerabilities, and we are chronically under-staffed. I have been told that our semi-weekly newspaper is not really a “news” paper, which compels me to set our sights on a weekly production schedule. The identity and exact readership of the paper have been repeatedly in question.

Even though we have suffered a great deal of hardship, we have managed to publish 49 issues for you, our readers. All of you are invited to read our 50th on May 27 and to help us shape the future of The Jeju Weekly through 2011 and beyond.

I do appreciate and acknowledge all those who give us loyal support and genuine criticism.

Along with the entire staff of the Jeju Weekly, I will continue our efforts to deliver a better newspaper issue by issue and year by year — and hope to be a part of your life.
