Foreign residents account for 1.5% of island population

The result of a Jeju provincial government survey on Jan. 1 revealed that foreign residents in Jeju number 8,499, an increase of 15 percent compared to 7,343 last year.

Among them, those without Korean nationality are 6,283 (73.9 percent), those with Korean nationality are 636 (7.5 percent), and children account for 1,580 (18.6 percent). Also, those migrating because of marriage number 1,485, international students count 899, and Korean residents abroad make for 351.

In a break down by nationality, there are 3,450 Chinese, 1,460 Vietnamese, 620 Filipinos, 467 Americans, 376 Indonesians, and 370 Taiwanese, among others.

The number of foreign residents of the island has been increasing since 2008.
