According to a provincial government report, a recent poll shows 65.3 percent of islanders favor a local referendum on the Gangjeong naval base project.
The survey, conducted by Mirae Research, polled 1,000 Jeju residents over the age of 19. It showed that 65.3 percent agreed to a local referendum on the naval base, while 26.3 percent of the people were against it and 8.4 percent were undecided.
Neighborhoods in Jeju City showed the highest rate of agreement at 69.9 percent while those in Seogwipo City showed the lowest support, at 55.4 percent.
By gender, males favored a referendum more than females, 69.5 percent to 61.3 percent. By age, 73.2 percent of people in their 20s agreed, compared with 51 percent of those in their 60s or older.
Reasons for opposing a referendum included “being against the naval base itself” (43.7 percent), “being in favor of the project” (35.4 percent), “preferring a public polling data over a referendum” (15.2 percent) and “other reasons” (5.7 percent).
