At 1:20 a.m. on Sept. 6, a fire broke out on a 4,000 ton Cruise ‘S’ that left Busan bound for Jeju Port.

The Coast Guard and Navy dispatched 23 vessels, including patrol ships, to rescue all the passengers and crew within two hours of the start of the fire.

Some passengers sustained minor injuries while boarding the patrol ship, but none of the passengers were injured in the fire. The injured passengers were taken to hospital via Yeosu Port.

One reason cited for the low number of casualties was that the sea was not rough and winds were light last evening. The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the blaze, and passengers say the fire started in the cargo hold.
