Five different Jeju premium beer prototypes made from Jeju spring water and the island’s own baekho barley have finished the first round of development.

Jeju Leading Industry Office and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Development Cooperation have an agreement on the development and commercialization of Jeju local beer and started developing premium beers using Jeju spring water and Jeju-grown barley.

The trial manufacturing facilities, which can create up to 60 kl per year (120,000 500 ml bottles) started developing premium Jeju beer products this past June.

The two organizations invited Governor Woo Keun Min, the Provincial Assembly Chairman Moon Dae Rim, the heads of other related organizations, and local representatives and held beer tasting sessions for the five types of beer.

The products that were presented during the tasting session were made from baekho barley, which was harvested for the first time this year. There is one lager in a traditional Czech style and four different types of ales — an American-style beer with a hint of mandarin orange, one that has the full aroma and taste of hops, a stout that has the taste of roasted black malt, and one with 6.5 percent alcohol.

Jeju Leading Industry Office is planning to invite engineers from European beer manufacturers to act as consultants and research consumer preferences of the locals, tourists, and visitors from the mainland.

In order to raise brand awareness, Jeju Leading Industry Office is going to develop the brand name, logo, and container design and finish developing the final iterations of the beers by April, 2012.
