Many reporters will say their editors have “god complexes.”

However, this past week I’ve seen this applied in a different context. When I took on the project of coordinating, editing, and publishing Steve Oberhauser’s reports from the field on his 1,200 km walk around Jeju (see last week’s column) I knew the work would be intense and relentless for a good two months or so. But just what kind of work and how much wasn’t clear... until now.

It’s been quite surreal, actually. That god complex, well, it’s come to pass on this project more viscerally than I’ve ever experienced on assignment before.

This is because while I’m entering the GPS data into our Google map, sometimes dozens of points per story, I feel like I’m right on the trail with him (though looking down from space). It’s a dizzying, vicarious journey, one I’m glad to share with our readers; even if I get carpal tunnel from the hundreds and hundreds of online edits.

As of this writing (Wednesday, Sept. 21) Steve has walked for 15 days and assessed 10 Olle trails, climbed 19 volcanic cones (oreum) and sent in 13 reports to The Weekly.

When he’s finished, he’ll write up and publish his ratings of all the trails and oreum, based on a set standard which will prove useful to anyone thinking of walking or climbing these geographic features. To see the entire series of his daily reports thus far, here is the shortened URL to the Hike Jeju section on our Web site: goo.gl/94lsB

On another note, we spent the last few months working with contributing photographers on this issue’s “Jeju in Color” special. I hope you enjoy it.

In the end The Weekly staff just couldn’t decide who should receive the “editor’s pick” for first prize (worth 50,000 won) and the runner-up (25,000 won). So we’d like to give you the chance to vote for your favorites. Go to Facebook.com/Jeju Weekly and “like” your favorite shots. The two shots with the highest number of “likes” by Oct. 1 will be awarded prizes.

Lastly, thanks to all of you who “liked” The Weekly’s Facebook page... we just passed the 2,000 mark.

See you next issue.
