Under a revised vehicle bill to be enforced from Nov. 25, the public will be able to purchase used LPG vehicles, though there are not enough supplies at this stage to fulfill demand.

The provisions of the bill state that people are only allowed to purchase LPG-fueled vehicles made in 2006 or earlier. Also, it is limited to vehicles previously owned by the disabled and veterans and does not include vehicles used for taxi or rental purposes.

A used car dealer from Hwabuk, Jeju City, said, “People ask about it quite often, yet there are only one or two cars available on the market in Jeju a month. It is nearly impossible to secure supply.”

He added, “All the dealers have received the official notice, but since there are almost no cars on the market, it is assumed that more trading will happen on private level.”

More citizens are looking for LPG cars because of the high price of gasoline which is almost up to 2,000 won per liter, while the LPG price is around 1,000 won.

Moreover, due to the supply shortage, the price of LPG cars on the market is likely to increase.

According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, as of Nov. 3, there are 37,357 registered LPG-fueled vehicles. Out of 37,357 vehicles, 5,464 are registered taxis and 15,000 are rental cars. Due to the smaller number of privately owned LPG vehicles, it may not be easy for people to find used LPG vehicles on the market.

Some citizens complained, “In order to purchase used LPG cars, [we] might end up going up to the mainland or look into Internet dealers.”
