The Writers Association of Korea will hold “National Highway No. 1 Peace Relay,” from Dec. 26 to Jan. 20. The event is a walking relay on national highway number one, which links Paju, Gyeonggi province to Mokpo, Jeonnam province. Participants will also walk from Jeju Port, Jeju City to Gangjeong, Seogwipo City.

This peace relay is to inform the public about iniquity and problems with the construction of a Jeju naval base to help Gangjeong villagers who have been struggling with the issue for the past five years.

The association stated the reason for the relay in a written statement.“We have pointed out iniquity of the construction plan and possible disputes through our writings, but the government was adamant.” The statement continued that, “We hope Jeju protects its value as ‘Island of Peace.’”

More than 100 writers are expected to participate, including Hyun Ki Young, author of “Aunt Suni,” a novel about the April 3rd massacre; and Gong Ji Young, who wrote “Dogani,” a novel based on the true story of children being sexual assaulted by their teachers while attending a school for the deaf.

On Dec. 26 at 10 a.m., after a “Peace declaration ceremony for anti-Gangjeong naval base” in Imjingak, Paju, Gyeonggi Province, each writer, who has previously been assigned a section of the route, will walk 10 to 30 kilometers. For more information, please call Writers Association of Korea at 02-313-1486.
