Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education (POE) has designed a “Winter break intensive English camp” for all elementary schools on Jeju from Dec. 26 to mid-February 2012.
Over 600 instructors, including native English teachers, Korean English teachers, and volunteers, are expected to oversee the 54 elementary schools.
The series of English camps, which could hold up to 8,500 students, are sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the POE.
Students from rural areas or low-income families are being given priority to sign up for the camps.
Camp programs include various activities, like cultural experience activities, free-talking sessions, games, chats, and presentations, which are designed to maximize student participation.
POE has said it anticipates an improvement of students’ English communication skills and familiarity with the English language.
“Each school [is at] liberty to organize their own curriculum, as long as the camp focuses on practical conversation skills in small group settings,” said Jeong Sung Jung, manager of Foreign Language Support Team at POE.
