With 231 days to go until Jeju hosts the 2012 World Conservation Congress (WCC) Sept. 6-15, Seogwipo City held a rally in support of a successful event, which was held at the future main venue — the International Convention Center (ICC) Jeju, located in Jungmun, Seogwipo City, on Jan. 19.

The 90-minute event was attended by prominent citizens including Yang Won Chan, the chairman of the National Committee for Jeju New7Wonders of Nature; Suh Young Bae, president of the National Committee of Korea at the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature); and Democratic United Party provincial council member Kim Jae Yun. Around 500 citizens from community organizations and villages around Seogwipo City were also invited.

Yang Won Chan spoke about how to improve Jeju under the assignation of being a New7Wonders of Nature site. Seo Young Bae also gave a lecture on Seogwipo’s vision and assignment as a host city for the WCC.

After the new mayor of Seogwipo City Kim Jae Bong addressed and greeted the convened invitees and guests, a written resolution supporting a successful hosting of the WCC was announced by Oh Mun Hak and Kim Young Sun, members of Seogwipo community organizations.

Among the Seogwipo citizens who participated, the Daecheon-7 village chief Kim Seong Bo told The Weekly, “I think I listened to very informative lectures today. I hope Jeju’s [beautiful] environment will be kept as it is.”

Another participant, Sun In from the Jeju City, came with acquaintances of his as he has been interested in this event. He said he feels proud of Jeju’s selection to host the huge WCC event.

“I hope the WCC will be successfully held,” he said.

Kang Dae Gyun, a Seogwipo City government official who was a member of the rally organizing team, said, “I am glad many citizens took part in the event today. [Seogwipo City] will do its best to hold WCC successfully.”

He concluded that this event is the starting point of Seogwipo’s WCC sprint to the finish.
