With winning three of the four possible events during the Korean leg of the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) on April 7 in Incheon, the North London Collegiate School (NLCS) Jeju take home first place and will be heading to Bangkok, Thailand this June to represent Korea in the global championship.
The WSC is an academic competition requiring students to utilize their knowledge and scholastic skills creatively in four heats: Persuasive Writing, Scholar’s Challenge (a written test in five academic categories), Team Debate, and Scholar’s Bowl (a quiz game where teams press a buzzer to answer questions).
The NLCS Jeju junior team, consisting of eight-year students Brian Park, Bryan Hwang, and Mike Hong, and coached by Frank Hardee, came in first out of 12 schools in all three categories except for the Scholar’s Bowl where they finished third.
Individually, the students walked away from the event with a total of 32 medals.
“As NLCS Jeju is a brand new school,” said Hardee in a press release, “this was obviously our first attempt at the competition so we did not know what to expect. However, Brian, Bryan, and Mike had clearly done some work and put in the effort as at the awards ceremony in the evening, it was clear that we had done very well.”
Hardee continued that the event he was most proud of was the Team Debate where they won a “clean sweep” of all medals in contention with Hwang winning bronze, Park silver, and Hong gold.
The World Scholar’s Cup Championship will be held at the Bangkok Convention Center & Bangkok Patana School June 21 to 24. |
