46th Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Sports Festival proves record breaking

The 46th Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Sports Festival was held from April 27 to 29 at about 60 gymnasiums in Jeju City including Gujwa Sports Complex. During the event two island records were broken.

A total of 14,626 participated in 56 competitions for 321 medals (168 gold, 121 silver, 32 bronze), making this year’s sports festival the highest ever attended in its history. Competitions included soccer, tennis, table tennis, handball, boxing, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, Taekwondo, and more.

The festival was divided into three divisions: the championship, amateurs, and the disabled, which had 35, 34, and 16 entries respectively. In the championship division, Kang Deok Ho became a new island record holder in the shot put, beating the previous record of 15.64m by 15.77m. Also, An Aeng Du in the discus set a new island record of 43.13m, beating the former 42.10m. Sixty-nine new meet records were set In long jump, discus, javelin, shot put, swimming, shooting, and weightlifting.
Gymnasts Yang Jin Su and Yang Se Mi attracted much attention for winning nine and six gold medals respectively. Among other multi-medalists were swimmers Sim Seong Ha, Oh Seung Cheol, Park Young Ho, Yi Yun Mi, and Ji Ye Won, and a bowler Yang Young Ja who won five gold medals.

Another accomplishment of note was a family of four participated in the festival. Yun Nam Bo, his wife, and their daughter each won gold medals in the weightlifting category, and their son also won in the running, swimming, and shooting triathlon.
