A dramatic increase in the use of electricity on Jeju in the last few days is pointing to further difficulties with the supply coming this summer. Abnormally high temperatures and a reduction in supply from the national grid are the main factors, according to a recent statement from officials for Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the Korea Power Exchange, Jeju office, on June 12.

On June 11, an hourly peak of 501,100kw was recorded on Jeju, an increase of 30,000kw from a year ago. Demand peaks at around 9 p.m., mainly from air conditioner use. Recent temperatures on the island have hit the high-20s during the day.

The Korea Power Exchange said it expects hourly peak demand will reach 681,000kw by late July or early August. The national electric power allotment has been reduced by 3,500,000kw per hour, which is likely to affect Jeju’s power supply in the coming weeks and months.

To combat this problem, the provincial government is planning to encourage businesses to set their thermometers to 26 degrees Celsius and to avoid air conditioning during peak hours. Businesses that are found to be using air conditioners with their front doors open will be fined.

The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the Korea Power Exchange, Jeju office said that the island currently has a stable level of reserved electric supply at 34 percent, but conservation will be key to maintaining this margin during the rest of the summer.
