Plastic packaging, such as PET bottles, makes up the largest percentage of all garbage accumulated around Korea’s shores. Compared to other beaches throughout the nation, there were relatively more plastic waste found at Jungmun Beach and Hamdeok Beach.

The research was done at Sokcho Beach in Gangwon, Wolpo beach in Pohang, Daecheon beach in Chungnam, Songjeong beach in Busan, and both Jungmun and Hamdeok beaches in Jeju.

Plastic bottles consisted of 22.7 percent of all garbage found on beaches last year and is regarded as the first culprit of shore garbage. Paper and food waste increased from last year by 3.8 percent and 7.7 percent. respectively.

There were more plastic bottles found in Jeju’s Jungmun Beach, Gangwon’s Sokcho Beach, and Chungnam’s Daecheon Beach than at other beaches.

The largest quantities of food, polystyrene, and metal wastes were found at Jeju’s Hamdeok beach, Pohang’s Wolpo Beach, and Busan’s Songjeong beach.

The Beautiful Community Forum collected 43,000 liters of garbages from six beaches this year. The garbage was picked up by 180 volunteers who applied for the Philip Morris Korean Clean Beach Campaign and handed out garbage bags to vacationers at the beaches and they analyzed the garbage collected.

In a related story, the Beautiful Community Forum hosted the Environment Photo Exhibition and Recycled Garbage Exhibition at Gangwon’s Sokcho Beach and Jeju’s Hamdeok Beach to increase awareness about the importance of preserving the environment.
