A team led by Park Se-pil, a fertility expert at Jeju National University, announced that an independent genetic test had confirmed a male Jeju Black calf to be a genuine clone. Park's stem cell research team employed a method known as somatic cell nuclear transfer to clone the subject bull; a technique first pioneered in the creation of Dolly the sheep in the early 1990s. Six surrogate mothers gave birth in March, but Heukdori, of Jeju’s native black cattle, was the only calf to survive. The experiment resulted in a 10 percent pregnancy rate, which is on par with world levels. The high-quality meat from Jeju Black cattle is seen as the “only” solution to counter the effects of free trade agreements on the island's livestock industry. However, as there are only about 400 Jeju Black remaining on the island, the supply is too low to promote it as a brand. Somatic cell cloning is expected to help boost the population.
