Jeju’s Herb Dongsan farm is a sensual delight to visit. Located just outside of Pyoseon in the southeast of Jeju, it is a great place to be naturally rejuvenated. The herb gardens are home to around 180 different varieties of herbs and a stroll through them is a magical feast for the senses. Herb Dongsan offers a great day out to enjoy nature and explore the cleverly laid out gardens.

A maze garden near the entrance greets visitors with a mixture of herbs and flowers. From here gardens branch out in every direction each with different themes. Most plants are labelled though usually with their Korean and scientific names. There are many different varieties of gardens to enjoy and many surprises tucked along the little pathways so make sure to explore all the gardens.

A windmill sitting atop the hill is one of the garden’s center pieces. Visitors can enter the decorative windmill on the hill for a better view across the gardens. The gardens around the windmill include whimsical and modern metal sculptures with elf-like figures in hats, tunics and boots, paddling in boats. One boat contains a small figure playing a pipe. Another nearby sculpture is a boy pushing a boat containing an elephant. Visitors will enjoy pondering these sculptures and many other pieces of art scattered throughout the gardens.

Sculptures are placed all throughout the herb gardens and are indeed attractions in themselves. Many modern art sculptures are human figures which are sometimes combined with animal characteristics. One garden has a sculpture with the head of a man and the body of what appears to be a rhinoceros. This blending of man and nature is a theme throughout the gardens.

Herb Dongsan is known for its large lavender garden, the largest in Korea, which blooms every May. The fields of purple lavender with their distinctive aroma dot the landscape with vibrant purple. Herb Dongsan has herbs for every season and a different color palette for each time of the year.

A leisurely wander among the fragrant bushes of 180 types of herb is perfectly concluded by a visit to the gift shop where a variety of herb-related souvenirs are available. Photo courtesy Herb Dongsan

Atop the hill are the white-shingled condos available to rent. Built in a western style they would not look out of place on the shores of Cape Cod. There is also a cafe to visit for a meal or snack. Many of the foods, including the breads, are flavored with herbs.

There is also a man made waterfall below the pensions that is framed by a flower garden. The waterfall is a popular place for visitors to pose for pictures.

The several gift shops all offer excellent herbal souvenirs as well as an assortment of gifts and Jeju merchandise. Favored products include herbal lotions, herbal candles, and perfumes. Some of the herbal products are even produced by the herb farm- look for the Herb Dongsan labels.

Herb Dongsan herb farm is a great place to unwind and enjoy herbs and other plants. Breathe in the wonderful fragrances and escape from everyday life. Spend a day relaxing in the farm’s gardens. Nearby sites include Pyoseon beach and the Jeju Folk Village Museum.

Herb Dongsan is located just outside of Pyoseon in south-eastern Jeju, just off Highway 97. For further information about Herb Dongsan farm, call 064 787 7362 or visit www.herbdongsan.com (Korean only). Visitors are also able to rent nearby condos by contacting the rental office on 064 787 7364.
