Namguksa is a Buddhist temple along Jungang-ro in Gu Jeju, a couple of kilometers south of Shi Cheong (City Hall) and a few hundred meters north of Jeju Daehak Sageori (Jeju National University Intersection). The temple buildings are not very noteworthy in themselves, but the gardens are stunning. In the weeks leading up to Buddha's Birthday (May 17) lanterns are hung from trees throughout the gardens and the blooming spring flowers create a kaleidoscope of technicolor.

The temple grounds also include a pond with picnic tables, fountains, Buddha statues, woodland walkways and grassy lawns. The grounds are worth a visit at any time of year, but as the pictures attest, the Buddha's Birthday celebrations bring out the beauty of the gardens. Namguksa will hold a special event for children to mark Buddha's Birthday at 11 a.m. on Friday 17 May.
