The Haenyeo are women who dive in the water without oxygen tanks to catch seafood. In the old days living on Jeju was really difficult because the land was not fertile. So they didn’t get enough food from farming for living. So they did “mool jil” which was harvesting seafood. The life of Haenyeo was very simple they go out farming in high tide and go out to sea in low tide.

Nowadays they get support from the Jeju governments such as health insurence, selling seafood process. Moreover, the Haenyeo have a Haenyeo license. If they have a license to catch sea food they can get some advantages. They earn money by the seafood that they catch. 10% of the seafood they caught is their money. The fishery coorperation called “ Soo hyeop” bid successfully.

One of the famous Haenyeo village is called the Hadori village.A haenyeo named Han sook hee had a hard life. She became haenyeo when she was19 years old. She had worked hard as a haenyeo. But she had worked so hard that her waist and her head hurts. So she doesn’t recommend being a haenyeo to her descendants.

But another named Park mi jung had a different opinion. She wanted to recommend being a haenyeo if the person wants to be a haenyeo.

The number of Haenyeo is decreasing because people think the job doesn’t give a lot of money and the job is very dangerous. So only the elderly people are doing it. But we must change our mind. The younger people have to be hanyeos too because it is one of the Jeju’s items.
