Dear Mr. Snowden,

Greetings and salutations from our humble community.  Since you don’t exactly have the luxury of planning out your exile on Tripadvisor, I thought I’d extend a friendly hand in your direction.

It seems like right about now, everyone wants a piece of you.  To some, you’re an enemy of the state.  To others, you’re an international hero.  Either way, thanks to propelling yourself into international stardom, you’re now an expat.  And as luck would have it, there’s a little known refuge in the western Pacific that’s great for harboring expats.  Mr. Snowden, welcome to Jeju Island, a place where runaways come together to make a new life.

If you’re missing home right about now, the “Hawaii of Asia” might be worth a gander. We’ve got it all and then some. Hot summers– hands off my wife –beautiful beaches, kayaking, kite surfing, great waves.  Winter is equally inviting with bone-chilling ocean breezes and palm trees covered in snow.  Our mermaids, known as the gentle haenyeo, scour the ocean floor to provide for you with a fresh and bountiful harvest.  All in all, Hawaii’s got nothing on this place.

Travel at ease.  Whether you’re travelling on fraudulent international documents in place of your recently revoked passport or the library card of your best friend, you can travel worry free.  Visas are easily attainable and even unnecessary if you plan on being a tourist here for the duration of your exile.  (Check out www.expedia.com for the cheapest fares).

Lodging is hospitable and convenient.  There are ample guesthouses and love motels where you will be untraceable.  Lots of liberal couch-surfing hosts occupy the island, but if you’re looking for something a little more clandestine, there are ample amounts of comfortable and price-friendly caves to kick it in for extended periods of time.

Your lucrative career has come to a screeching halt.  There are no more spy agencies or contractors to be employed by, no more secrets to be stolen, no more governments to embarrass…well, not for you, anyways.  Rest assured that you won’t be the first political exile here.  In fact, Jeju was the home for many political exiles throughout Korea’s history.  And if you’re still looking to extend a finger in the face of government, Gangjeong Village is the place for you.  Anti-military/government/American sentiments run high here - welcome home!

So what do you say?  Give us a look?  It can’t hurt to give Jeju a try.  What’s the worst case scenario?  You hate it and decide to leave?  You won’t be the first to make another midnight run, and no one will hold it against you.

Yours sincerely,

Tom Summers
