There are many reasons for The Union of International Associations (UIA) recognizing Jeju as a top international destination for MICE events. Even apart from the obvious beauty of this natural wonder, facility and organizational strengths have contributed to growth and stability.

An international island

Jeju is famed for its natural beauty and has numerous international titles: UNESCO World Natural Heritage, Biosphere Reserve, Geopark, and New7 Wonders of Nature. Jeju is also an international free city, which means overseas visitors do not require a visa.

The island boasts a modern international airport offering flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Taipei, Osaka, Seoul, and more. There are now 43 international routes flying out of Jeju International Airport, connecting Jeju with the rest of Asia and the world.

The Jeju MICE industry

Jeju is ideal for conventions and incentive tours, with its combination of stunning scenery, world-class convention facilities, five-star accommodation and a thriving tourism industry.

The island has long been the location of choice for business and leisure in Korea, but the MICE industry only really began to take off after the Jeju International Convention Center (ICC) and Jeju Convention & Visitors Bureau (Jeju CVB) were opened in 2003 and 2005, respectively. Since then Jeju has risen on the global stage to become recognized as a top Asian and global destination.

Jeju proved it had the infrastructure, personnel and governance to stage events of the highest order and rocketed to the top of national MICE destinations. Events held include: ADB, PATA, ASTA, UCLG, World Scout Conference, ASEAN-KOREA Commemorative Summit, KOR-JAP-CHI Trilateral Summit, and the 2012 IUCN WCC.

The growth was fuelled by the establishment of Jeju CVB and the 2009 designation of MICE as a “New Growth Engine Industry” under The Jeju Special Act.

MICE Growth

Jeju was cited as the fastest growing international convention city in the UIA Statistics Report 2012. MICE is central to the local tourist industry strategy and free movement of people, goods and capital has flourished under Jeju Free International City and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.

Jeju has continuously improved its MICE infrastructure through highly trained and dedicated personnel, overseas marketing and the success of various conferences and conventions.

78 conferences were held in Jeju last year and Jeju ranked 22nd in the world, eighth in Asia and second domestically, according to UIA figures for 2012.

Jeju’s position as second in Korea is notable as Korea itself held the fifth highest number of conferences globally in 2012 at 563. This is a 5.6 percent world market share - a 20 percent increase on 2011 - meaning Jeju, impressively, has an almost 0.8 percent share of global conferences.

Jeju CVB establishment

Jeju CVB was founded in March 2005 to attract MICE events to Jeju after the central government sought growth in regional MICE and tourism industries. Jeju CVB is a non-profit organization comprising 95 corporations, a conference facility, 21 accommodation businesses, 14 tourist attractions, 16 tourism businesses, and 43 others.

Jeju CVB is part of the wider tourism market on Jeju and combines conventions and conferences, holidays, leisure sports, green tourism, and incentive travel. Jeju CVB is involved in guiding and advising customers, providing funding for special events, co-developing proposals, and marketing MICE events.

The bureau is the central axis that ensures that all things run smoothly: it can help provide transport, introduce conference facilities and hotels, suggest golfing trips and much more! It is your bridge to Jeju and the main marketing arm of the Jeju MICE industry.

Jeju CVB uses marketing, promotion and exploratory funds to attract clients to the island. Once a client expresses interest, officials from Jeju CVB then prepares the itinerary and services tailored to them. The bureau is a vital tourism support mechanism, while also being crucial in Jeju’s overseas image.
