Jeju’s poor results continue as the Seogwipo outfit was held to a 0-0 draw with Chunnam Dragons at the Seogwipo World Cup Stadium. Jeju is now five games without a win and have fallen out of the playoff places after a Busan IPark 5-1 victory over Gyeongnam.

Park Kyung Hoon fielded his first choice 11 except Seo Dong-hyeon who started on the bench after international duty and tiredness. There was no place even on the bench, however, for new signing Rodriguinho.

The first chance went to Chunnam on 10 minutes when Wesley shot from the just inside the the penalty area but his weak shot didn’t trouble Bak Jun-hyeok in United’s goal. 7 minutes later it was again Chunnam as Shim Dong-un shot from the right of the box with a strong effort. Jeju’s defense was made to work hard in the opening exchanges.

Jeju’s chance came on 18 minutes when Lee Jin-ho controlled the ball and shot, but Kim Byung-ji in United’s goal was equal to it. 6 minutes later and a spectacular effort from Brazilian Maranhao nearly put The Orange ahead. The ball came into him in the penalty and he acrobatically overhead kicked it towards goal. The ball flew just past the post.

United began to dictate the rhythm of the game and dominated possession. Top-scorer Pedro was next to threaten and drove into the box at pace, avoiding an onrushing defender and shooting with his instep to the right of goal. It seemed to be destined for the net, but Kim in the Chunnam goal saved well to the home fans’ disappointment.

Despite the United pressure it was Chunnam who nearly found the opener just before the interval. Wesley, again a thorn in United’s side, found himself momentarily free and unleashed a shot, but the fingertips of Bak Jun-hyeok came to the rescue.

In the second half Chunnam coach Ha Seok-ju withdrew Lee Hyeon-seung for Bak Gi-dong to strengthen up the midfield. 18 minutes into the second half, coach Park also rang the changes, taking off Lee Jin-ho and bringing on Seo Dong-hyeon in a tactical switch.

Just one minute after the switch and United almost went behind. The ball fell to Shim Dong-un in front of goal but his shot was brilliantly saved by Bak Jun-hyeok in United’s goal. United then brought on Oh Seung-beom on 66 minutes for Song Jin-hyung.

A great chance fell to substitute Seo Dong-hyeon on 68 minutes. An overlapping run released Kim Bong-rae who crossed into the area. Seo, with a golden chance to score, just couldn’t connect with the ball.

Both teams went for the winner as the match drew to a close with chances at either end. Heo Jae-won was brought on for Hwang Do-yeon on 80 minutes and Chunnam’s Bak Jun-tae was introduced for Lee Chong-ho on 84 minutes.

The changes did little to change matters and despite a half chance for Maranhao in injury time the game fizzled out for a draw.

Jeju fell out of the playoff places and sit eigth on 29 points, while Chunnam is five points behind in 10th. Jeju needs to get back to winning ways with just five games left until the league is split for the playoffs.

The main plus to come out of this game for Park is the team’s first clean sheet in 11 games, stretching back to the 0-0 Incheon United in May. He still wasn’t pleased, however, with how his team played.

“The players gave their all but our options in the middle were not good. When the opposition play through the center I want the team to make it more difficult for them,” said Park.

Park then seemed to pinpoint the hot weather as the reason for his sides drop away from form in the last few months, suggesting so many games should not be played.

“Matches were played in the middle of a heat wave. In my opinion, they should be moved. If just one or two players are affected it breaks the balance of the team,” he added.

“You can see the reason for our bad results in the months of July and August right here. From  this point we will check the condition of our players and do our best in the remaining games,” said Park.

Next up for United is Incheon United in the FA Cup on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the World Cup Stadium. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
