JET Fest (Jeju Experience Tour & Festival 2013) was held Oct. 18 to 19 at Jeju City Youth Campground in Bonggae-dong, Jeju City. The event showcased some of Korea’s top rock and alternative bands playing to appreciative crowds.
This was the first event in what is to be an annual event and organizer Park Eunsok, a Seoul-based music journalist born on Jeju, wants it to be the start of a cultural revolution on Jeju Island. Park has vowed to raise the profile of music and turn the island into a music hub by holding further events through the year.
Acts performing on day one included Sister’s Barbershop headlining and Hot Potato, Monni, Wiretap in My Ear, Sultan of the Disco, Rock ‘N’ Roll Radio, and local favorites South Carnival. Day two saw YB, Jang Pil-Soon, Beenzino, Romantic Punch and Achime and more. A stage was also set up for local talent on Oct. 19.
These shots were taken by Jeju Weekly photographer Douglas MacDonald who covered the event on Saturday, Oct. 19. MacDonald was pleased by the quality of the acts on show.
“When I was first asked if I was interested in photographing this event, I was worried that it would feature only K-pop. But, as I stepped into the "pit" between the stage and the crowd, all my preconceptions of the kind of music that would be on display vanished and I was pleasantly surprised to see some good old fashion rock and roll.
"Right from the very first act, when the drums began pounding and the guitars crackled to life, all the musicians showed off an amazing amount of skill and energy. The cheering crowd was deafening. Everyone was clearly having a great time."
