Jeju Provincial Governor Kim Tae-hwan recently approved the establishment of such hospitals on the island, in cooperation with the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. Roh Gil-sand, at the ministry believes the change will “upgrade our [Jeju’s] our national competitiveness among North Asian countries.” However, the Korean Federation of Medical Groups for Health Rights claims that: “It is natural that profit-seeking hospitals will seek to provide excessive and unnecessary treatment,” and expressed concern that for-profit hospitals will steal doctors away from others.
The government recently sent a Medical Law revision bill to the National Assembly. If the bill goes through, Jeju could see the opening of its first profit-oriented hospital within four years.
