A Meeting of Various Cultures

Have you ever heard the expression ‘global village’? It means that the whole Earth is considered a village. Nowadays , as the word, ‘global village’, the world is becoming a community. Accordingly, we need opportunities to look and experience various cultures. So, where can we do this easily?

On Friday, November 1st, 2013, atJeju Students Cultural Center and Jeju Dong Girls’ Middle School, The 7th Jeju Global Foreign Language Festival was held. This event consists of 35 booths. There are English story-telling contests, English pop song contests, Chinese song contests, Golden Bell quizzes and so on. At these 35 booths, various cultures are presented.

For example, you could make food, wear clothes, and play games. Of course, they are people from various cultures. Additionally, in the open air, there are some physical activities.There are many people ranging from elementary to high schools.

So many booths are filled with hosts and the people who enjoy each activity. They are enthusiastic in spite of the hot weather.

Then what is the purpose or value of this event? Kang Wonhyo, a director of international education head of department of Jeju International Education & Information Institute said, “The outcome I want, according to this event, is that it raises interests in foreign languages. And based on this, foreign language abilities are getting better.”

One of the participants, Harold who is from U.S.A said “I think it is very good because it gives students a chance to experience different cultures around the world.”

Also, Narathe who is from South Africa said “I think it is a great idea for students learn about the other countries and have fun.”

Jeju Global Foreign Language Festival is a festival where you can meet people and learn about different cultures.
