Businesses protest the FTA between Korea and China
5 thousand Jeju business people gathered at Tapdong Plaza Oct. 31 to protest against the Korea-China FTA which they claim will damage Jeju industry. A petition was collected to be delivered to Seoul.
Governor Woo pledges 10 billion won to prevent pine wilt disease
Governor Woo pledged extra funds as part of revised pine wilt disease combat measures and visited hard-hit sites across the island. He claimed the extra expenditure would benefit citizens and the environment as the public criticized the official response which had failed to stem the disease spread.
55.5 billion paid to airport by duty free shops
Due to high fees demanded by Jeju International Airport - quadrupled since 2003 - domestic duty free shops operated by Jeju Development Center reported a drop in profit from 94.5 to 90.5 billion won. The public has not only criticized Jeju Airport for the high fees, but also and JDC for losing taxpayers’ money.
Chinese law leads to sharp drop in tourist numbers
Chinese tourists visiting Jeju Island have severely dropped due to a new law to heavily regulate low-budget tour agencies. Tourists had complained of being forced to visit shopping outlets and low quality attractions and local agencies had taken commission charges for such tours. The regulations have led to a decrease in agencies and compulsory itineraries.
Governor Woo Keun-min to join New Frontier Party
Woo held a press conference on Nov. 5 confirming his application to join the Park Geun-hye government and complete the mission to complete the Jeju Free International City. Governor Woo was elected as an independent candidate after he left the Democratic Union Party in 2010.
