In 2008, the Jeju government planned to have a new development on Jeju island: the Jeju free international city. One of the facilities that recieved the most attention was the Global English Village. To date, three international schools have been built in the international city, Branksome Hall Asia (BHA,) The North London Collegiate School, and the Korea International School. Out of the three, BHA is the very unique school.

BHA is an all-girls school that currently accepts students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The original school is in Toronto Canada. The 110-year old independent girls’ school is consistently ranked as one of the best boarding schools in the world.

Branksome Hall Asia is a candidate school for the PYP(primary years program) and MYP(middle years program). This school is authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program and as such is an IB World School. According to the BHA website, BHA offers a strong liberal arts curriculum that focuses on the holistic development of the girls. Not only are their students challenged academically, but their artistic and athletic abilities are fostered through both classroom and co-curricular activity.

The principal of BHA, Glen Radojkovich, gace a personal introduction, “I’ve been on Jeju for 2 years, and in Korea for 3 years. I was up in Seoul for one year designing, building, preparing, and stocking the school. I used to fly down to Jeju every week to visit the progress and help progressing school. I’ve been a principal for long time. The last school that I was in was a boarding school in New Zealand. So it was a big challenge for me to come to Jeju. Im really enjoying being here and get to know people.”

He continued, “The school is progressing extremely well. Delivering same sort of education as the Canadian school, we thought that it is important to be in keeping with that approach which is why we’re an all girls school in Jeju. The part of our mission is challenging and inspiring girls. We feel very passionate about doing that. Currently we are having about 600 students.” He introduced his school saying, “Our school motto is ‘Be remarkable’. With regard to that, we believe every student has within them the opportunity to do something remarkable. For the special events held in our school, we focus a lot on community service. Students organize everything, we had coaching soccer program from Jeju FC, we host Model UN, music, and art programs.”

There is a large percentage of students from the mainland compared to the small porportion of students from Jeju. This ratio is the common for all 3 international schools. The principal included the fact during his speech, he said “ We have small percentage of Jeju students. We try to give as many scholarships as we can to Jeju students. Most of our students probably come from Seoul. We have about 66 students from other countries.”

Branksome Hall Asia, as a international school on jeju, they are providing girls with the courage and confidence to stand up in the world. Like the Jeju government is hoping, BHA is contributing to the success of the Jeju International City.
