Two Jeju citizens walked away with prizes from the 5th Competition for Multicultural Education, organized by the Ministry of Education and conducted by the National Center for Multicultural Education of the National Institute for Lifelong Education.
One prize was provided for multicultural education by the Minister of Education while the other was provided for multicultural education assistance by the the National Institute for Lifelong Education.
For multicultural education, Koh Taekhyun from Topyeong elementary school was awarded for her multicultural literacy program targeting Korean as a second language. Her program creatively combined social science and educational activities within the curriculum.
For multicultural education assistance, Min Jaeseok from Jeju Multicultural Education Center was honored for his program which utilized Jeju Multicultural Education Center as a center for multicultural experiences.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education said the awards were the result of their firm support for the Jeju Multicultural Education Center. It is the first time such as center has been directly managed by a provincial office of education in Korea. Programs available target improvement in multicultural students’ academic performance and multicultural education programs are also provided.
To ensure successful integration of students, Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education pledged continuous support for the programs and to share the examples of best practice with local schools.
