Today electricity is essential to our daily lives. At work or at home, we use electricity to run most appliances, such as televisions, computers, cell phones and refrigerators. In order to use electricity, we need to produce electricity. After the Industrial Revolution, electricity was made by using thermoelectric power plants. After a time of using these plants, some problems were found, such as environmental pollution. These plants release a lot of CO2, contributing to global warming. So, today we use renewable energy. This energy is used more effectively with a Smart Grid. The Smart Grid is a system that manages the electricity supply.

In Jeju, there is town, Gujwa-eup, that has a Smart Grid test-bed. The project consists of five domains: smart place, smart transportation, smart renewable, smart power grid, and smart electricity market. The whole system costs 239 billion won.

According to the guide at the Smart Grid Information Center in Gujwa-eup, there are many electric cars and environmentally friendly systems. In the field of electricity cars, KAIST is inventing a car that is given a charge of electricity when driving on the street. Also, according to the guide there is a peak time, when people use the most electricity during the day. The Smart Grid's target is to reduce the amount of electricity that is used during peak time.

In the future, this Smart Grid could be used frequently. For more information, visit the Smart Grid in Gujwa-eup or visit the website http://smartgrid.jeju.go.kr.
