Today’s cover shot was captured by Kim, Hwan-Cheol, president of Jeju Photography Club and photographer for Headline Jeju News, a local media outlet. He is also former International Exchange Assistant Administrator of the Photo Artist Society of Korea, Jeju Branch.

A 20-year veteran, Kim has been a photographer since 1992 when he joined the Jeju Photography Club and now works at Headline Jeju docu-menting traditional Jeju culture.

Despite the intense current interest in Jeju’s culture, Kim recounts that in the 1980s and 90s photographers focused mainly on the island’s land-scapes. This has now changed, he says, with more attention given to Jeju’s other heritages.

He has a deep interest in this cul-ture, including shamanism, haenyeo and the island’s stone walls. This edition’s cover shot reflects Kim’s deep affinity with the horse, which he says is intrinsic to Jeju’s culture. The photographer says it was not a straight-forward shot to capture.

“The photo was taken at Gyorae Village. I had been waiting for almost 2 hours to take the shot at some distance from the horses as I was concerned about scaring them. I was very happy and fulfilled to finally get the shot as I had to be very patient,” he says.

Kim emphasizes that photography reaches out to people in a way that the word just cannot.
“Photos speak directly to people. When reading about Jeju we cannot truly appreciate the essence of the island, but people are immediately touched by a powerful image. I am proud and inspired when my work can do that to people,” says Kim.
