The International Boxing Association (AIBA) awarded the 2014 Women's World Boxing Championships to Jeju on Feb, 18 after Canada pulled out having failed to find a suitable venue, reports insidethegames.biz.
Canada had been selected as the host back in July 2012 by an AIBA Executive Board meeting in Bangkok but a suitable venue was not found in time. The AIBA restarted the bidding process and Jeju, which will also hold the AIBA congress in November, immediately registered its interest.
The AIBA announced that the strong Korean bid was helped by the cost-effectiveness of holding the congress and the championships in the same city. The competition will be held at Halla Gymnasium between November 13 and November 25.
It will be a busy time for sports fans on Jeju as the 95th National Sports Festival is set to be held Oct. 21-27. |
