[NIE] A day of action after five days waitingIt comes every five days so make the most of the five-day market

When it came back into town, the people had been waiting for five whole days. The parking lot was 1)packed and there were 2)throngs of people everywhere. This is the Jeju 5-Day Traditional Market, which opens every five days on days that end in 2 and 7.

There are five-day markets all over the 3)mainland, too, and travelers usually visit them to experience the local culture. Jeju City’s main one is in Dodu 1-Dong, and it has been open for over 100 years.

Lisa and Theresa, teachers at KIS (Korean International School) were visiting the market to buy some fruit and vegetables as it was “fresher and cheaper” than the big marts.

“We think that the five-day markets in Korea are very unique. We are from the USA and there are no markets like this. Foreigners can learn a lot about the culture in this area.”

As they said, although people have to wait five days to experience the five-day market, A)people would rather shop there than big supermarkets like Emart and Lotte mart. People say the food is cheaper and more 4)trustworthy. Park Sanghyun, from Ido 2-dong, said:

“I visit here with my family some-times and I feel very comfortable and warm whenever I visit this place. I think the market is very good for people because they can experience a lot of things. I like this place very much.”

There are many corners such as the food corner, clothes corner, ani-mal corner, etc. Lee Jungja, who sells vegetables at the market in the “grandmother’s corner,” said, “I’ve worked here for about 10 years, so I know how the market has changed over the last 10 years. However, one thing that has never changed is that lots of people still visit the market, even young people and students, too.”

Baek Hyungoh, who has worked in the market for 3 years, said, “I sell a Korean snack ‘peongtuigi’ [cornflakes]. Someone suggested I start working here. I am very happy when people buy a lot of my snacks … obviously.”

It is not only the customers who wait five days for the market, as 5)merchants like Mrs. Lee and Mr. Baek do too. It is a long wait for people B)earning a living from it and C)many anxiously anticipate the market day.

They only have a few hours to get all their business done as merchants peddle their wares to the crowds. D)One of the engines of the local economy, this five-day 6)cycle keeps repeating, on and on and on.
