A “stay still” march in memory of Sewol ferry disaster victims was held Saturday, May 10, in Jeju City. Around 100 people joined the silent march at City Hall and marched to Tapdong and KBS Broadcasting wearing masks, black clothing and yellow ribbons while holding “stay still” placards.
The march's "stay still" theme was in response to the Sewol tragedy when passengers were ordered by the captain to “stay still in your compartments,” while he was one of the first to be rescued from the vessel.
The fateful order has been adopted as a sign of defiance to highlight the authorities’ negligence in not being able to save a single passenger after the first day of the sinking and signifies the will of the people to challenge the authorities.
The march is part of a nationwide movement which began in Seoul and has now spread to many other cities. Jeju marchers spread news of the event through Facebook and Jeju Mom Café leaving the police confused, reports Jeju Sori..
