[This advertorial is a true story written by one of The Jeju Weekly contributors. Jeju No.1 Electronic Cigarette Department Store is a sponsor of the newspaper]

Five years ago, I came to South Korea a cool three-pack-a-day smoker, envisioning myself to be cancer-stick free. I was about to become a teacher, a mentor of students. After arriving at Incheon International Airport, I needed just one more smoke after the grueling 11.5 hour flight. Then, I made it to Gimpo and thought, “ah, just one more.”

I was greeted at Jeju International Airport by two soon-to-be good friends – my boss and roommate. And it took all of three minutes to realize that quitting smoking wasn’t going to be a problem. If fact, I wasn’t going to have to quit at all, and that made me a happy man.

Marlboro Mediums. Nothing else sufficed. Breakfast was usually inhaled with a pot of coffee. Lunch and dinner came after a couple of smokes, washed down by a few more.

A couple years went by, and I hadn’t humored the idea of quitting again until my wife and I found out that she was pregnant. In less than a second I knew, without question, that I didn’t want either of them around the second-hand smoke or the smell. But while quitting seemed like an easy no-brainer, the actual follow through was a different beast to tackle – one that would be plagued by failure after failure.

A weekend trip to the Five Day Market unveiled a new idea – the electronic cigarette. It was wonderful. Although it didn’t give me the same satisfaction as my typical smoke, it gave me something for the oral fixation and the nic-fits, not to mention the satisfaction of a deep pull and a heavy smoke exhale. It was fantastic!

And then it died. I struggled to stay a non-smoker, but I found myself trying to sneak a smoke in when I could, never quite sneaky enough the bloodhound sniffer of my wife. I was a smoker of the worst kind, and I needed something more to help me break from buying a pack and sneaking a smoke when no one would notice.

And then I found Dubacco (now Jeju No.1 Electronic Cigarette Department Store), a shop specializing in e-cigarette technology and nicotine solutions. Located at Saemuseo Intersection, City Hall, it is easy to find by the orange décor and large “ÀüÀÚ´ã¹è” (Jeonja Dambae) sign.

They host a diverse catalogue of products and have varying styles of e-cigarettes, ranging from slender to thick and short to long, with differing battery lives and correlating costs. There’s also a full selection of nicotine solutions, available in almost any flavor imaginable: tobacco, menthol, blueberry, watermelon, coffee, apple, and so on. The majority of the juices are either American or Korean made, ranging from nicotine-free to 18mg/ml.

The customer service at Dubacco is also top-notch. Employees are quite friendly and helpful, and the company stands behind their product. If an e-cigarette battery stops working for any reason or starts to dull in appearance, they won’t hesitate to replace at no cost.

Is it worth it? That all depends on the consumer, their smoking habits, and what they’re looking to get out of the product. Some are chain smokers looking to kick the habit; others are social smokers, fighting the temptation of having a smoke with a drink and dealing with a heavy chest the following day.

Over the years, I’ve tried a number of smoking cessations: the patch, gum, lozenges, and nicotine sprays. They’ve all helped in their various ways, but I’ve never made it past the oral fixation. With the e-cigarette, I’ve kicked traditional cigarettes. I’ve gone from 18 mg nicotine solutions to almost nicotine-free smoke. I genuinely feel better, smell better, and overall, am satisfied enough with the product that I keep giving them my money.

If you’re keen on just giving it a try, free of purchase, swing by one of their two locations where they have samples on display.
