Jeju Furey Beach Volleyball 11 was a resounding success at Hamdeok Seoubong Beach, Jocheon-eup, over May 17 and 18. Plenty of funds were again raised for the Furey families and records broken in terms of teams taking part, participants and out-of-towners competing.

The mood was upbeat as the 222 players and 37 teams dragged themselves to the courts early on Saturday morning to battle it out for four bracket titles. The numbers were the highest yet, as were the 26 people from outside of Jeju, including one from Japan and one from China.

Troy MacLellan, a longtime Furey supporter, participant and volunteer said this year was the "biggest and best thus far,” which he believes speaks volumes for the success of previous tournaments.

MacLellan was also keen to note the increasing numbers of people coming from outside of Jeju, not only paying the entrance fee but also having to fork out for flights and hotels. “As I said, that speaks to the quality of the product Furey offers,” he said.

Furey founder Dan Nabben also praised the spirit of the event in not only encouraging people to come back again but also welcoming newcomers to play as a team for the first time over the weekend.

“I think it's just great. Getting to share this fun with more people is a good thing... [Many participants] made the trip before and recruited friends to join them a second time. That really says a lot about... what they think about the event,” said Nabben.

By late Sunday afternoon, around 20 hours of volleyball had sorted the wheat from the chaff and the four winning teams were:

D Bracket
Momma Lucy and her Mermaids (Amanda Ghegin, Sasha Reave, Kelli Jocoy, Calvin Lewis, Shannon Warren, Jasen Mangarro)

C Bracket
Tip Drill (Ashley Gitchel, Lìu Ngọc Mai Liu (Mai Liu), Bu Hye-ji, Scott Tiffin, Walker Vance, David Bevilacqua (Jinju))

B Bracket
Set'em Husseins (ThuVan Ho, Stacy Coglianese (Seoul), Julie Brice (Seoul), Tim Serre (Seoul), Jerich Abon, Kang Gyeong-chan (Seoul)

A Bracket
Back Toss (Amy Ward, Amber Boyce, Laura Morris (Busan), Joshua Worthington (Seoul), Yormy Kim (Seoul), Hyeonjun Park)

Joshua Worthington’s Back Toss team took home the A bracket title and his words echoed those of MacLellan and Nabben.

“This was the most rewarding tournament I've ever won. The competition was really even and after the first day, I did not think we were favorites at all to win... All of that led to extreme joy and relief that we were able to beat out such good teams.

It was also a no-brainer for Worthington to travel down from Seoul for the event.

“I love volleyball. I love tournaments. When these two things are done right, there aren't many other things I'd rather be doing... The organization, the competition, the people, the atmosphere... everything is absolutely amazing,” he said.
