Province develops comprehensive plan for marine industry promotion

Detailed plans for marine tours, cruise tours and marine leisure tours will make Jeju a hub for marine tourism in Northeast Asia, say tour officials, and a detailed roadmap will be developed.

A “Comprehensive Plan for Marine Industry Promotion” will be prepared to support systematic policy promotion for the marine industry. The six targeted areas will be: marine tourism, marine leisure and sports, cruises, shipping networks, marine biology and marine culture.

To ensure the industry is an engine of future green growth, key pillars include:

- Assessing the environmental impact of the domestic and international marine industry.
- Developing a visions and goals for Jeju marine tourism.
- Developing a long- and short-term road map based on the six targeted areas with core strategy, investment and funding plans.

Manpower training and support for the marine industry and related public institutions will be targeted.
Jeju Development Institute is charged with implementing the plan due to its human resources and research experience. An interim report will be released in July with the full plans published by October after deliberation with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Marine Policy Council.

An official said, “We already have great port infrastructure and marine tour facilities; therefore, if we organize a proper master plan and implement it, the dream of becoming a hub of global marine industry will come true.”

Jeju Outer Port parking lot construction

A key part of Jeju Outer Port’s redevelopment will be completed soon with the construction of a large parking lot on the Jeju City site. Jeju Special Self-Governing Province reports that a 8,600 square meter parking lot will be located on a currently unpaved area which totals 17,200 square meters as part of the second stage of development.

The 1.1 billion won project started in April and should be completed by September this year. The parking lot should provide space for around 100 tour buses and salt-resistant trees will also be planted in a waterfront park.

Users of the port facilities have complained of a lack of parking spaces in the area. The construction is expected to contribute to Jeju cruise industry and the landscaping project and waterfront park will even become tourist attractions in their own right, officials say.
