For two months from July 1 to August 31 only 605 vehicles per day will be allowed entry to Udo Island to protect the environment and combat traffic congestion. Residents’ vehicles will not be affected by the measure, which dates back to 2008.
Two vehicle control rooms will be established by local authorities to manage the traffic on the island and to minimize inconvenience for members of the public. Information boards will be installed at Seongsan port, where ferries to Udo depart, and authorities have pledged to work alongside tourism associations and travel agencies in informing the public.
Despite the 220,000 visitors to Udo between July and August 2013 signaling a mere 0.9 percent increase on 2012, the 34,000 vehicles taken to the island represent a 22.7 percent increase on the previous year. A fifth of Udo’s 1.08 million annual visitors arrive during the high season. |
