Leaked details of Ramjung Jeju Development Corporation’s 2.56 trillion won investment at Resorts World Jeju, part of the Myths and History Theme Park in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo City, include blueprints for the world’s largest casino, reports Kim Bong-hyeon of Jeju Sori.
Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC), managing the project, and the provincial authorities face a public backlash after a 62,000 square meter casino was included in the plans as part of an upscale hotel in the “A District” of the park.
The Jeju Myths and History Theme Park is one of the JDC’s core projects and for a long time failed to attract investment. The project was eventually supported by Landing Hong Kong and Genting Singapore as they sought to turn the park into a world-class resort complex. Ramjung Jeju Development Corporation, an affiliate of Landing Hong Kong, is currently developing Resorts World within the A District.

However, the plans have been thrown into doubt following Governor Won’s decision to postpone the groundbreaking ceremony in June after the plans were shown to exceed the agreed planning permission. The recent leaks, including the previously unknown 44,189 square meter basement, also show areas labeled “casino” and “casino extention area [sic]." Ramjung claims these areas will actually house a banquet hall, office and lounge.
On July 1, in a TV interview with KBS, Governor Won said he will not grant planning permission for any additional casinos during his term in office. During his election campaign Won had stated that casinos’ benefit to the Jeju economy is negligible and he wanted to maximise the societal benefit of existing casinos before considering any additional applications.
If completed, the Ramjung casino would have been larger than The Venetian Macao, currently the largest casino in the world, Jeju Sori reports.
