Jeju provincial government is planning to set forth a new master plan to counter low birth rate and an aging society that looms as one of the biggest challenges in Korea. The package plan to increase population includes extensive financial and administrative support systems to help the birth and child rearing. To create a society environment in which men and women are guaranteed the right to start a family, the local authority, in particular, launched what’s known as “Happy Society to Breed Children” administrative office this July and continued to raise awareness and involvement in the campaign to tackle the shrinking population. This move came when South Korea in fact ranked lowest given the birthrate was 1.19 according to a census by the National Statistical Office last year.
