On June 13, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province signed an agreement with three international schools at the Jeju Global Education City in Daejeong to allow them to hold English camps during the summer months.
Last year the camps were ruled prohibited under government law as they had not registered as private educational institutes in order to provide the classes. This led to anger among parents keen for their children to be educated at the camps. Such camps are extremely popular during the summer break despite high fees for native-speaker instruction.
All such educational camps are governed by the Law of Management, Establishment of Private Educational Institute and Private Lessons which requires institutes providing private lessons are registered as “Private Educational Institutes.” The JGEC schools also attracted criticism due to the high expense of the camps.
To address the issue, the Education Ministry announced in April new criteria governing educational camps within school facilities following a government decision in December to allow such camps if schools reach agreement with local government officials.
Accordingly, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province drew up new regulations including safety measures, reduced fees and incentives for local disadvantaged students. It is hoped that the agreements between international schools and Jeju authorities will allow everyone to enjoy the benefits of holding English camps at the JGEC. |
