Jeju is expected to receive heavy rain and high winds as a result of Neoguri, the eighth typhoon of the season but the first to affect Korea. Jeju will feel its influence from Tuesday, July 8, to Thursday, July 10 as it passes south of the island, being closest on Wednesday night.
Neoguri formed as a tropical depression near Guam on Friday, July 4, and was upgraded to a mid-sized typhoon over the weekend. The typhoon is heading toward Okinawa, Japan, and it is expected to bring heavy rain to Jeju as it passes within 220 k.m. of Seogwipo City on Wednesday afternoon before moving northeast.
The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a typhoon alert, stating, "The typhoon is expected to hit Japan on Wednesday at midnight and move north... It will have a slight influence on Jeju.”
Weather Underground currently ranks the depression as a Category 4 typhoon and it is projected to become a Category 5 "super typhoon" before hitting the Japanese islands and weakening.
Neoguri means raccoon in Korean and it is one of the Korean words submitted to the Asia Typhoon Committee. The committee sequentially selects typhoon names from a list of 10 words submitted by each of the 14 nations in the typhoon region. For a list of these names click here.
