Jeju Samdasoo bottled water was established by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation[JSSPDC] with the aim of creating capital for Jeju people through the use of one of the Island’s most plentiful resources; volcanically processed mineral water that is naturally purified by Jeju’s environment. Since Samdasoo’s inception in 1994, it has gained the honor of being considered the best brand of drinking water in Korea and has been listed as one of the top 100 Korean brands for 4 consecutive years. It is currently the best selling water packaged in PET bottles within the country. In 2009, to create a more universally recognized brand, Samdasoo hopes to prove, through research, that the Jeju volcanic rock bed creates a better quality of drinking water.

JSSPDC, known for effectively promoting an array of products with the intentions of increasing the welfare of the Jeju people, was awarded the best prize for 2009 Respected Company Management Innovation. This award would not have been possible without JSSPDC’s ambition and foresight to thrust Samdasoo into the global market. In preparation for the expansion the company employed a consulting firm for several months to examine, critique and adjust Samdasoo’s management status and methods of operation. The most important change was centered on building innovative goals and understating how to manage them. Unlike other public companies, Samdasoo and the JSSPDC have been able to organize themselves based on objective outcomes.

One of the more fundamental and drastic changes came from the notion of doing more work, better. This idiom led to the construction of newer, better, and more efficient production lines. The effect was felt immediately with the Samdasoo factory increasing its production by 95 tons in 2007. Moreover, the improvement decreased breakdowns and halts in production by 42 %. Overall, Samdasoo, increased its production by 93 %.

Currently, Samdasoo bottled water is being export all over Southeast Asia and the company hopes to make its distribution worldwide within the near future.

Still a relatively small company with fewer than one hundred employees, Samdasoo continues to honor the foundations on which it was conceived on over fifteen years ago. Samdasoo supports lower income bracket Jeju citizens by supplying rental houses for a third of the normal rent. Furthermore, the staff and their family members have organized the ‘Jeju Samdasoo Volunteer Corps’ that does charity word every month for the benifiet of lower income individuals around the island.
